Histological parametric maps of the human ocular fundus: preliminary results
نویسندگان
چکیده
Specific colours observed in images of the ocular fundus depend on the architecture of its layers and the optical properties and quantities of any pigments present. These colours can be predicted from the parameters describing the ocular tissue composition using a physics-based model of light transport. This paper reports preliminary results of the application of the inverse process by which the parameters can be estimated from image colours. This is achieved by relating the colour of each image pixel to the closest matching colour predicted by the light transport model, and hence to the parameters which generated it. The spatial distribution and estimated quantity of each parameter is shown in a separate image called parametric map. The first parametric maps of Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) melanin, choroidal melanin and choroidal blood computed by this method show a distribution of pigments which is generally consistent with physiology.

Quantitative analysis of multi-spectral fundus images
We have developed a new technique for extracting histological parameters from multi-spectral images of the ocular fundus. The new method uses a Monte Carlo simulation of the reflectance of the fundus to model how the spectral reflectance of the tissue varies with differing tissue histology. The model is parameterised by the concentrations of the five main absorbers found in the fundus: retinal ...

The interpretation of in vivo spectral reflectance measurements of the ocular fundus requires an accurate model of radiation transport within the eye. As well as considering the scattering and absorption processes, it is also necessary to account for appropriate histological variation. This variation results in experimentally measured spectra which vary, both with position in the eye, and betwe...

Preclinical studies designed to define potential side effects resulting from the use of hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) photoradiation therapy (PRT) as a modality for treating intraocular tumors have been performed. Pigmented rabbits were used to evaluate acute normal ocular tissue toxicity following single HPD PRT treatments in which the light was directed through the pupil and onto a 1-sq cm...

Purpose To develop a non-invasive method for quantification of blood and pigment distributions across the posterior pole of the fundus from multispectral images using a computer generated reflectance model of the fundus. Methods A computer model was developed to simulate light interaction with the fundus at different wavelengths. The distribution of macular pigment and retinal haemoglobins in t...
